Once, it was the home to the hum and clatter of countless looms and sewing machines, but things have changed for the Garment District. As the world has moved from industrialization to globalization, it’s a neighbourhood blooming into something new.
Buildings that once turned out racks of clothing and textiles by the yard is moving toward something else. Now it’s becoming a hub for business and a home to startups.
Transformation is opening new doors in the area, allowing for people to reimagine what it means to be a part of the Garment District.
The Hive is the perfect example of this. Phases I and II are located in what used to be a factory where hosiery was made. Now, it’s becoming a hub for startups and small businesses. Repurposing the spacious interior with modern, made-to-measure offices for small- and medium-sized businesses.
The Garment District is is part of the wider District Central, an area of Montreal bursting with potential. With ready access to transit and affordable rents, the area is growing into a new phase. The district is focused on helping tenants new and old come together to bing about the area’s rebirth.
The neighbourhood has always been one of transition and transformation. It came into being between the mid-sixties to the mid-eighties, when the fashion industry moved from downtown north along St Laurent. Now that process continues.
Bit by bit, new business are opening while buildings go through updates and renovations to bring them from their industrial past into modern office spaces.
It’s an exciting time in the district, come be part of the transformation.
